Giant of Africa Can’t Power One Major City – Peter Obi
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi laments the stark contrast between Nigeria’s power situation and that of Tanzania. While about 70% of Tanzania’s rural population has gained access to electricity, over 60% of Nigeria’s population lacks access. The situation is so dire that Nigeria cannot even power one major city like Abuja, while Tanzania has managed to power all their major cities. The government must take urgent steps to remediate and save the sector for the good of the nation.
According to Obi, a World Bank report shows that strong political will and commitment have been instrumental in Tanzania’s rapid progress in electricity access. Between 2011 and 2020, urban dwellers saw a significant increase from 7% to almost 40%, while rural areas experienced a growth from 7% to 25%. In contrast, Nigeria’s energy progress report from 2022 revealed that over 60% of its population lives without electricity.
The situation is further exacerbated by the recent electricity tariff increase, making it even more imperative for the government to address this issue. Tanzania’s success story serves as an inspiration for Nigeria, as they have managed to power all their major cities and provide electricity access to rural residents.
In response to this issue, Obi urges the government to sanitize and rescue the sector for the good of the nation. With competent and committed leadership, Nigeria can surpass Tanzania’s achievements in power generation. A stable power sector is crucial for economic growth and human development in Nigeria.
