Read Why Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked from Chelsea

Chelsea’s managerial situation under Mauricio Pochettino: A complex debate with valid arguments on both sides

The debate surrounding Chelsea’s decision to keep Mauricio Pochettino as their manager has been a contentious issue among fans and pundits alike. On one hand, there are those who believe that the team’s recent form justifies sticking with Pochettino, while on the other hand, there are those who argue that the team missed an opportunity to act sooner and dismiss him or move on at the end of the season.

On the positive side, Chelsea have enjoyed an impressive run of over two months (eight games) unbeaten in the Premier League. They are currently seventh in the table but have games in hand against teams above them, including Tottenham, Newcastle, and Aston Villa. In the past 12 matches, only Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City have had better records than Chelsea. Additionally, Pochettino led Chelsea to the FA Cup semi-finals, marking their best domestic run of league results since October-December 2021 under Thomas Tuchel.

Furthermore, the emergence of young players such as Malo Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah, Cole Palmer, and Nicolas Jackson has been promising for Chelsea fans. These players have shown signs of starting to click and gel within the team. For many supporters, this is reason enough to stand by a head coach after years of hasty sackings.

However, it is important to note that not all of Chelsea’s recent results have been positive. Draws against Brentford, Burnley, and Sheffield United still mar the good recent run. The manner in which these games were lost was just as concerning as the end results themselves. Just beyond that previous hill were consecutive defeats against Liverpool and Wolves. Middlesbrough also claimed victory in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg in January.

Despite these dips in form, some argue that they are natural for a squad comprised largely of inexperienced Under-23 players who have spent very little time together. Others see Pochettino’s highlights as too infrequent and worry about the next failure or capitulation around the corner. The humiliation at the hands of Arsenal may well have tipped the scale for some fans and pundits.

Ultimately, whether one stands on either side of this emotionally charged debate depends on individual perspectives and expectations for Chelsea’s performance this season. Some believe that waiting out the rest of this campaign will provide a clearer picture of how to judge Pochettino’s tenure at Stamford Bridge. Others argue that it is noticeable that both Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole leapt to his defense pre- and post-match following Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal. Regardless of personal opinions, it is clear that there are valid arguments on both sides of this debate in 2024.
