Sit-at-home : South East govs condemn killing of soldiers in Abia
The South East Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, strongly condemned the attack on soldiers in Aba, Abia State. The incident occurred during a sit-at-home directive enforced by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate Biafra Day. The attack resulted in the death of two soldiers and the burning of security patrol vehicles. Governor Uzodimma described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized the need for peace and security in the region. He called for the perpetrators to be apprehended and prosecuted to prevent such acts from recurring.
The attack on the military unit at Obikabia Junction in Aba was carried out by gunmen on Biafra Heroes Day, declared by IPOB across the South-East. The assailants ambushed the soldiers, leading to casualties among the military personnel. The incident has raised concerns about security in the region and its impact on peace-building efforts between the South East governors, the Federal Government, and security agencies.
In response to the attack, various stakeholders have condemned the violence and called for justice for the slain soldiers. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, also denounced the killing of military personnel and urged residents not to engage in activities that could escalate insecurity in the region. Efforts are being made to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The tragic event underscores ongoing tensions surrounding issues related to separatist movements like IPOB and their calls for sit-at-home directives. It highlights challenges faced by authorities in maintaining law and order while addressing grievances within communities that feel marginalized or aggrieved.
