Maritime workers vows to join nationwide strike on Monday
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has vowed to comply with the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to join in the indefinite nationwide strike commencing on Monday, June 3, 2024. The President General of MWUN, Adewale Adeyanju, emphasized the necessity of the strike due to the failure of the Federal Government to conclude national minimum wage negotiations and reverse the increase in electricity tariffs.
In a statement signed by John Ikemefuna, the Head of Media for MWUN, members of the union have been directed to ensure total compliance with the strike at all ports nationwide, jetties, terminals, and oil & gas platforms. This decision is in alignment with the directives issued by both NLC and TUC.
The strike action was declared by organized labor following dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of minimum wage negotiations and its reluctance to lower electricity tariffs. The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, announced that the strike would commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024. The joint statement expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to pass a new National Minimum Wage Act and address concerns about electricity tariffs.
Therefore, maritime workers in Nigeria are set to participate in this nationwide industrial action starting on Monday as part of a broader protest led by NLC and TUC.
