WAEC Speaks On Suspending Monday Exams Over Labour Nationwide Strike
The 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will continue as scheduled despite the indefinite strike announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on June 3, 2024.
Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, the Branch Controller of WAEC in Ekiti State, made this known in a letter to principals and school proprietors in Ekiti State on Friday, May 31, 2024. The letter titled “Notice of commencement of indefinite strike by NLC and TUC” with reference number EK/BC/SC/EXAM/07/Vol.1/89 stated that “the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled.”
The examination began in Nigeria on Tuesday, April 30, and is expected to end on Thursday, June 20, 2024. The letter further stated that “WAEC will conduct the exam,” and urged school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public to make adequate arrangements for their candidates to sit the exam.
The strike was called due to the failure of the Federal Government to agree on a new national minimum wage and pass it into law despite being notified on May Day that workers would down tools if that doesn’t happen before the end of May. However, WAEC shares the burden of the unions but believes that students should not be at a disadvantage by missing the ongoing examination in Nigeria and other West African states.
