A total of 632 law students failed the Nigerian Law School’s final bar examination in 2023, according to the Council of Legal Education.
The Council made this announcement on Sunday, June 4, 2023, in a statement signed by its Director-General, Prof. Isa Chiroma. The examinations involved a total of 2,515 participants. Among those who passed, only five students achieved First Class honors. Prof. Chiroma described the performance as outstanding but noted that 25.12% of the students (632) failed the examinations. He further explained that other performances included 3.06% in Second Class Upper, 25.17% in Second Class Lower, 42.42% with pass marks, and 3.26% with conditional passes. Additionally, 0.7% of students were absent and 0.8% results were withheld (Chiroma, 2023).
The Nigerian Law School’s result release for the previous year (2021) also showed significant numbers of failures; a total of 1,325 persons failed the examination out of a grand total of 5,770 participants (PUNCH Newspaper, 2021). This represented approximately 23% of all examinees who sat for the bar final examinations that year.
