South Africa’s Minister for Sports Resign Over Corruption Allegations

South Africa’s Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa resigned following allegations of corruption. Kodwa was arrested and appeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on charges of corruption. The allegations against him involved a former EOH executive who allegedly channeled payments of over R1.6 million to Kodwa. Despite denying the allegations, Kodwa decided to step down from his position. The African National Congress (ANC), to which Kodwa belongs, stated that he would be subject to the party’s constitution regarding his case.

Kodwa is accused of contravening Section 3 of PRECCA and Section 4 of the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act. His resignation came amidst ongoing discussions within the ANC about forming a government after the party lost its majority in an election. Government corruption was a significant factor contributing to the ANC’s loss in the election.
