Chelsea rename Stamford Bridge in honour of star striker
Chelsea have renamed Stamford Bridge to “Samford Bridge” temporarily in honor of Sam Kerr, who has signed a new contract extending her stay until 2026. This change will last until Sunday. Additionally, Chelsea’s Kingsmeadow stadium is renamed “Kerrsmeadow” for the same period.
Sam Kerr, the Australian striker, joined Chelsea in 2019 and has been a pivotal player in Chelsea’s women’s success, contributing to winning five Women’s Super League (WSL) titles. She recently signed a new two-year contract extension with Chelsea, keeping her at the club until 2026. Kerr has been recovering from an ACL injury sustained in January and is expected to return next season.
The renaming of Stamford Bridge to “Samford Bridge” and Kingsmeadow to “Kerrsmeadow” is a temporary tribute to Sam Kerr’s contributions and loyalty to the club. The gesture reflects her importance as a fan favorite and leader within the team.
This move by Chelsea comes shortly after Sonia Bompastor took over as head coach, succeeding Emma Hayes. The general manager of Chelsea, Paul Green, expressed delight at Kerr’s contract extension, highlighting her leadership qualities and goal-scoring prowess that have been instrumental in the team’s success.
