Lagos State Govt.demolishes illegal structures around drainage

The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has initiated the removal of illegal structures obstructing drainage channels in areas like Okota, Oshodi – Isolo Local Government Area. The operation, led by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Ministry for Environment, targeted structures such as street gates, security posts, fences, and even shrines built on drainage channels and canals. The demolition was carried out to prevent flooding caused by blockages in the drainage systems due to these illegal constructions.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner Lagos and zero tolerance for building on drainage right of way. The enforcement units of the ministry have been actively involved in removing structures that impede the free flow of rainwater and contribute to flooding across various parts of the state.

Residents in affected areas expressed support for the government’s actions, acknowledging that these illegal structures had been causing flooding issues during rainy seasons. Some residents highlighted that local government officials were allegedly involved in allocating spaces for these illegal constructions and collecting levies from the owners.
