Six jailed for internet fraud in Kwara

Six persons have been jailed for internet fraud in Kwara State.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction of six individuals on charges related to cybercrime and fraud. The convicts, prosecuted separately, appeared before Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court and Justice Adebayo Yusuf of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin. The convicted individuals included Aransiola Stephen, Owoeye Ezekiel, Idris Kayode, Abdulrahmon Abubakar, Rafiu Adisa, and Raheem Monsur.

A statement from the EFCC indicated that a total of 24 out of 50 suspects, comprising 48 students of the Kwara State University and two Malete residents, were arrested during a sting operation for internet fraud offenses on February 21, 2024. Following guilty pleas by the defendants, they were found guilty based on the facts presented in court and sentenced to various jail terms. The courts also ordered the forfeiture of phones, laptops used in the crimes, and money brought as restitution to the Federal Government.

In a separate incident involving six students from Kwara State University and two others arrested for internet fraud offenses, they pleaded guilty before Justices Evelyn Anyadike and Adebayo Yusuf. The defendants were convicted based on their guilty pleas after prosecution counsel reviewed case facts and evidence recovered at the time of arrest. Various jail terms were handed down along with fines and orders for forfeiture of phones and bank account balances to the government.

Additionally, another group of six individuals was convicted by Justice Evelyn Anyadike for internet fraud offenses in Kwara State. The convictions were part of ongoing efforts by the EFCC to combat cybercrime in the region. The convicts were charged with fraudulent activities such as impersonation and obtaining money through deceitful means. They were found guilty based on evidence presented by the prosecution and sentenced to fines along with orders for forfeiture of phones and illicit gains.

Overall, these cases highlight the concerted efforts by law enforcement agencies like the EFCC to address internet fraud activities in Kwara State through arrests, prosecutions, convictions, and sentencing aimed at deterring such criminal behavior.
