ENUGU RANGERS WIN EIGHTH NPFL TITLE
Enugu Rangers have won the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title with a two-point lead over their closest rivals, Remo Stars and Enyimba. The Flying Antelopes secured their victory with a 2-0 win over Bendel Insurance on Sunday, thanks to goals from Kenechukwu Agu and Chidiebere Nwobodo.
The title race was decided when both Remo Stars and Enyimba lost their respective matches against Sunshine Stars and Sporting Lagos. Remo Stars were defeated 2-1 by Sunshine Stars, while Enyimba faltered in a 2-1 loss to Sporting Lagos. These losses left Rangers with an unassailable five-point lead at the top of the table, with 67 points from 37 games.
Rangers’ coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, expressed his elation after the team’s victory: “We are the champions; we are the champions of 2023/2024 NPFL. It’s not easy to be a champion.”
This is Rangers’ eighth league title in their history, making them one of the most successful clubs in Nigerian football. They previously won the NPFL title seven times: in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, and 2016. Only Enyimba has more titles than Rangers with a record nine titles.
