Peter Obi Lament over Money used to build VP’s Residence

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has criticized the proposed N27 trillion 2024 budget for allocating N15 billion for the construction of a new residence for the Vice President. Obi believes that this allocation is unjustified, considering the many challenges facing the nation, such as the collapse of health facilities and skyrocketing unemployment. Instead, he advocates for more compassionate and frugal leadership that prioritizes the needs of the masses and the development of human capital.

Allocation for the Vice President’s Residence

Obi’s concern stems from the N15 billion proposed for the construction of a new residence for the Vice President in the 2024 budget. He argues that this allocation is exorbitant, especially since there is already an existing residence for the Vice President that recently underwent a N2.5 billion renovation in the Supplementary Budget.

Comparison to Other Budget Items

In contrast to the allocation for the Vice President’s residence, Obi highlights the inadequate funding for student loans (N5 billion) and the lack of significant capital votes for major teaching hospitals in Nsukka, Lagos, Ibadan, and Zaria in the 2024 budget. He insists that resources should be directed towards addressing pressing issues, such as improving health facilities and increasing educational opportunities.

Necessity of Compassionate Leadership

Obi emphasizes the importance of compassionate leadership in driving the progress of the nation. He calls for leaders who are willing to sacrifice for the common good and development, as well as those who can empathize with the plight of the masses. Such leadership, he argues, is critical in the journey towards a New Nigeria.

Peter Obi’s Background

Peter Obi served as the Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 and is known for his strong stance on good governance and accountability. He has been recognized as an advocate for good governance and a national political figure since leaving office in 2014
