“What a man can do, a woman…” How a 41-year-old lady emerges VC of UNIABUJA

Nigerian public has been stunned at the announcement of a 41-year-old lady as the Vice-Chancellor of prestigious University of Abuja (UNIABUJA).

Senate of the university has okayed Ms Aisha Maikudi who already has the status of the youngest professor on the campus since 2022. Before the appointment, Ms Maikudi was serving as the deputy vice-chancellor in charge of academic affairs, said Habib Yakoob, the spokesperson of the institution.

She would assume office in acting capacity tomorrow when the five-year single-term tenure of the incumbent vice-chancellor, Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, is expected to end.

Ms Maikudi would be the first person the recent National Universities Commission (NUC) directive is going to favour.

It is NUC new approach that all outgoing vice-chancellors of federal government-owned universities should nominate one of their deputies to pending the inauguration of the universities’ governing councils.

UNIABUJA: Who is Aisha Maikudi?

Aisha Maikudi was born on 31 January 1983. She started at Queens College, Lagos before proceeding to University of Reading where she graduated with LLB in 2004, and then, LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005.

On September 4 2008 Maikudi started teaching as Lecturer II at University of Abuja. She became first female Deputy Dean at the University’s Faculty of Law in 2018, and in 2019, the pioneer director of the University of Abuja International Centre.

She attained full circle in 2022, becoming the youngest professor in UNIABUJA.
